September 30 – A Poor Woman Finds Help – Ruth 2
Ruth is a poor widow living with her mother-in-law, another poor widow. It is interesting to see another way the poor were taken care of in these times. Land owners were to allow the poor to glean the fields after the reapers had gone through the fields. Gleaning meant going through a harvested field to collect missed wheat, beans, corn, or whatever was grown in the field. It was up to the poor to work to glean the field. An individual that was both poor and lazy went hungry. 2 Thessalonians 3:10-11 “For even when we were with you, this we commanded you, that if any would not work, neither should he eat. For we hear that there are some which walk among you disorderly, working not at all, but are busybodies.”
