November 18 – Baptism of Jesus – Matthew 3
Jesus gets baptized by John the Baptist in this chapter. Jesus wanted to please His Father by obeying the commands of the prophets, and by identifying with God’s righteous cause among the people. He explained to John the Baptist that baptism was essential to fulfill His righteousness. Jesus set the perfect example for us to follow. The Father speaks audibly twice in the book of Matthew; here and at the mount of transfiguration. On both occasions, He identifies Jesus as His Son. The Father expresses specific pleasure in what Jesus’ baptism. Also notice in verse 16, the opening of the Heavens demonstrates that both the voice and the descending Spirit came from heaven and were divine. Baptism is not necessary for us to be saved, as Jesus had no need of salvation; but it is necessary to please God. Have you been baptized after you trusted Christ as your Saviour? If not, I would encourage you to do so at your first opportunity.
