In this chapter, we read about the last plague, the death of every firstborn of Egypt. Again, God offers protection to the Israelites but this time it’s in the form of a holy feast and ordinance that was to be kept by the Israelites for all generations. It was the Passover.

God as always was very specific in how to take part in this holy event. Even down to what was to be done with the leftovers, God left no question. They took the blood of their sacrifice and paint the lentil and sideposts of their door.

What has always stuck out to me about the Passover was how God told the people that they should eat it, in haste, with their shoes on their feet and the loins girded. This wasn’t a time of celebration but a spiritual battle.

That night, when the angel of the Lord saw the blood on their door, he passed over that house. This is a picture and foreshadowing of what Christ did for us on the cross, Jesus Christ is our Passover! When God looks upon those who have trusted in Jesus for salvation he will see the blood of Christ and his holy judgement will pass over us!

As for Egypt, the Bible said that there was a great cry in the land that night. I can’t imagine the sorrow, devastation and regret that those left behind went through. Likewise, someday, those who haven’t accepted Christ will experience devastation even worse.
