September 11 – Adam – Genesis 1
Adam holds the record for many “firsts” in the Bible. He was the first: human, man, husband, father, grandfather, orphan, veterinarian, arborist, and gardener among many other titles. More notably, he was created by the hands of God. Adam was the first to feel the pangs of guilt after a sin was committed. Adam dealt with the first failure as a parent as Cain, Adam’s first born son, killed his brother Abel. Can you think of any more “firsts?”
Adam and Jesus were the only ones to ever experience a bloodline directly from God that was free from sin. It was through Adam that sin and death entered the world (Romans 5:12), and it is only through Jesus that sin can be forgiven and life can be gotten (John 3:36). 1 Corinthians 15:22 “For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive.”
We do share a couple attributes with Adam. As Adam was created for a specific purpose, we are created for a specific purpose. As God took care of Adam’s needs, so God takes care of our needs. As Adam had to face his sin problem, we too must face our sin problem. As Adam’s joy in life was directly related to his pleasing God, so our joy is directly affected by our success at pleasing God. How many more similarities can you recall?
