December 24 – The Reason for the Season – Genesis 3

The reason behind the reason for the season is found in Genesis 3.  The “Reason for the Season” is celebrating the physical birth of Jesus Christ, God’s only begotten Son, upon this earth.  Jesus would grow up and fulfill His purpose on this earth by dying on the cross then rising from the dead, three days and three nights later.  In Genesis chapter three, we read of why Jesus had to come to this earth.  The devil had come to Eve in the form of a talking snake.  The devil tempted Eve to sin by disobeying the only rule God had placed in the Garden of Eden.  The only rule God implemented was for Adam and Eve not to eat from the fruit from the tree in the middle of the garden.  The devil did his best to make sin appealing to Eve.  Eve saw that the fruit was “good for food, and that it  was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise.”  The devil tried to convince Eve there was more benefit in pleasing herself than pleasing God.  No matter what our reasoning, when we disobey God it is called sin.  God is Holy and Just.  God cannot allow sin into Heaven.  As Eve and Adam had sinned, they passed down their sin nature to their children and to all men.  All mankind was doomed to an eternity separated from God and Heaven.  The only other place one can go for eternity is Hell which was prepared for he devil and his demons.  God, in His love, sent His only Son to this earth in the form of a human being to pay our sin debt by dying on the cross as payment for our sins.  So you see, the reason for the season is to celebrate the physical birth of Jesus upon this earth, but the reason behind the reason for the season was sin.  Adam and Eve’s sin?  Yes, but also your sin and mine.
