July 7 – Making Your Salvation Sure – 2 Peter 1
Anyone can know that they have eternal life. Anyone can know for sure that when they die they will go to Heaven. Anyone can repent of their sins, and trust Jesus Christ as their Saviour. 1 John 5:13 “These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God.” You see it is Jesus Christ, the Son of God, that is the only One that can do the saving. It us up to us to do the believing. Once someone has become a child of God, and placed himself in God’s hand; no man can pluck him out of God’s hand . . . not even himself.
Why does someone who has become a child of God ever doubt that his salvation is sure? The answer is found in 2 Peter 1:9 “But he that lacketh these things is blind, and cannot see afar off, and hath forgotten that he was purged from his old sins.” Why has this man forgotten that he was purged form his old sins? Because he cannot see afar off. Why can’t he see afar off? Because he is blind. Why is he blind? Because he lacketh these things. What things? The knowledge of God which has a very high value to the Christian. How well do you know God? What do you know about God? What does God know about you? How powerful is God? What is God in control of? How do you know if you are blind to the knowledge of God? Verses 5 thru 7 gives us an outline of how we grow in the knowledge of God. All Christians should consistently, daily work on their faith, virtue, knowledge, temperance, patience, godliness, brotherly kindness, and charity.
