September 23 – Jeremiah in Prison – Jeremiah 38
Jeremiah spent much time in prison for his boldness as a prophet. In today’s reading we find a group of princes that petition King Zedekiah to put Jeremiah to death. Although the king did not end Jeremiah’s life, he did lower Jeremiah into a wet muddy dungeon much like a cistern. You can imagine how miserable these circumstances were. It was Ebedmelech that came before King Zedekiah to ask for Jeremiah’s release from the dungeon. Ebedmelech was literally putting his own life in jeopardy to make this request. To be persecuted as a Christian is much different today. As we see fellow Christians persecuted it is just important today as it was in Jeremiah’s day to stand up for those being persecuted.
