December 4 – Parable of Forgiveness – Matthew 18
In the second half of this chapter, Jesus tells a parable with the topic of forgiveness. A servant is granted forgiveness of a large debt owed to a king. Upon leaving the king’s presence, the servant ran into a fellow servant that owed him a debt. When the fellow servant could not pay, he desperately asked for more time to pay the debt. The servant refused and instead had the man put into jail. When the king heard of the servant’s actions, he got so angry that he reinstated the debt and put the servant in prison.
The meaning of the story is found in verse 35. Jesus explained that our Heavenly Father expects us to excercise forgiveness since He has excercised so much forgiveness on us.
