Week 7
February 10 – Elisha – 2 Kings 2, 4, 6
Elisha became the assistant of Elijah when Elijah found him working. God has a history of using busy people. Elisha asks for a double portion of Elijah’s spirit. After Elijah is gone, Elisha immediately puts to practice his faith. Through the different stories we read today, it is evident that God was behind Elisha’s actions. I hope God shows through each of our actions today.
In 2 Kings 6:8-17 we find a young man that sees what cannot be seen. After the Syrian Army surrounds the entire city with the sole purpose of coming after Elisha, it is understandable that Elisha’s servant would be terrified. Elisha explains to the young man that there are more warriors on his side than there are on the enemies side. Elisha, seeing this does not calm the servant, confidently asks God to open the eyes of the young man. God grants Elisha’s request, and the young man sees the mountain side covered with Angels ready for battle on horses and chariots as well as chariots of fire around Elisha. Imagine the confidence and peace washing over the young man.
Many times in this life it would bring us great peace and confidence if we could see what cannot be seen. What you must understand is that even though you cannot see God’s presence, you can KNOW God’s presence is there. Elisha never asked God to open his own eyes. Elisha just knew God would protect them. Psalm 91:11 “For he shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways.” Why wouldn’t we want to Please a God like that?
